Sanitation & Infrastructure Project
bring joy, dignity, and celebration.
Built in 1955 as Uganda’s National Referral Hospital for mental health, Butabika Hospital remains the country’s only facility offering free treatment, feeding, accommodation, and clothing to patients.
Originally designed for 500 in-patients, it now houses over 1,300 in-patients, placing immense strain on resources especially sanitation.
Recognizing this, Soul Foundation prioritized the construction of new toilet and bathroom blocks in 2021, supporting the hospital with project design and corporate mobilization.
Through strategic partnership with MTN Foundation, which funded the construction at a value of UGX 335,000,000, and the KCCA Directorate of Public Health and Environment, which provided technical design and compliance oversight, the project was realized successfully.
The result is a first-of-its-kind channel-flush sanitation system that combines toilets and bathrooms in one hygienic, water-efficient facility restoring privacy, dignity, and comfort to patients.
Despite COVID-19 disruptions, the project was completed and handed over on 17th February 2022, marking a major milestone in patient welfare and mental health infrastructure.
