Grooming Day
Grooming Day was created to help patients at Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital reconnect with their sense of self-worth, confidence, and dignity.
On this special day, Soul Foundation volunteers and partners come together to offer free haircuts and grooming services, simple gestures that often spark profound emotional transformation.
What begins as a trim often becomes a moment of recognition, a powerful reminder that they matter.
Over the years, we’ve been joined by renowned celebrity barbers and stylists such as Zziwa from Hair by Zziwa and Bryan Barber, who generously give their time and skill to this cause.
Zziwa’s presence is especially meaningful; once a patient in the Alcohol and Drugs Unit himself, he embodies the message of hope, recovery, and the possibility of a full, productive life after mental illness.
The day unfolds in laughter and beautiful connection. We spend time in the wards, as patients eagerly await their turn.
As the barbers cut hair, Soul Foundation volunteers massage the patients’ heads with aftershave, a small act of care that brings smiles, comfort, and calm. Conversations flow freely with stories, jokes, and shared humanity filling the space.
This collaboration was made even more impactful through the Wahl Clippers Corporation team in Uganda, who generously supported the initiative.
Each cut, each touch, and each shared moment reminds every participant that healing isn’t only found in medicine but also in being seen, valued, and cared for with love.
