bring joy, dignity, and celebration.
What began in 2018 as a simple idea to bring joy, dignity, and celebration to patients spending the holidays at Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital has blossomed into Soul Foundation’s most beloved annual tradition.
Now in its 6th edition, the Butabika End-of-Year Festival has evolved into a month-long celebration of life, community, and healing, culminating in a joyful cookout and Christmas celebration for over 1,500 patients and staff.
The impact of this gathering reaches far beyond the festivities. Every year, patients, caregivers, volunteers, and corporate partners come together in a shared spirit of compassion and in doing so, something magical happens.
The walls that often separate “patients” from “visitors” dissolve, replaced by laughter, music, and meaningful human connection. For the patients, it is a rare moment of belonging and celebration while for the volunteers, it’s a reminder of purpose, empathy, and shared humanity.
What started with just three volunteers in 2018 has now grown into a thriving community of over 87 volunteers by 2024, each one bringing their unique energy, gifts, and love.
Alongside them, a growing list of corporate partners from local businesses to major companies have joined hands to sustain and expand this initiative. Their contributions, whether financial, logistical, or in-kind, have helped transform the festival into what it is today: a symbol of hope and unity that continues to grow in impact and reach.
Watching this event evolve has been nothing short of beautiful. What was once an outreach visit is now a season with three major events, The Cookout that everyone patients, staff, and volunteers alike eagerly anticipate, The children’s party and hospital-wide cake cutting, The staff appreciation party. For many, it marks the highlight of the year.
Today, the festival stands as a reflection of what is possible when we choose empathy over indifference, when a society recognizes that mental health care is not just the practioners responsibility, but a shared responsibility. The difference it makes is profound.
Patients rediscovering dignity and belonging, volunteers experiencing purpose and gratitude, and together building a culture where healing becomes a collective act of love.
