One day when visiting a relative in the Alcohol and Drugs Unit of National Referral Mental Hospital, our founder got the idea to do one dance session with the patients there thinking that unlike the “other” patients, they were well enough to follow the routines and since they “supposedly” pick up the vice in places that play similar music, they would appreciate it better. Instead, the hospital administration in their response to our request, insisted that we dance with the “other” patients which we agreed to reservedly. That first class however changed our lives forever and we gladly went back every month for three (3) years until the COVID 19 pandemic.
A year into the sessions, with a deeper understanding and appreciation of mental health and its challenges, we knew we had to do more hence the birth of Soul Foundation Ltd. Our unique perspective is not of a sufferer, a practitioner or non-medical staff of the hospital, but ordinary people who have taken the time to see with an open mind what goes on with these patients, how they perceive us and of course the misconceptions people like us (who believe we are fine) have about them. This is why we felt the strong need to start raising awareness of mental health and the Butabika Hospital itself.
We Are One
When a person is not ok, they give off an energy which can be felt by another and if one is happy, the same energy can indeed be felt and transferred to another without physical contact.
When someone around us is struggling with a mental health challenge, we all suffer in one way or another, so in order for us to ensure our own wellbeing, we have to do our part to ensure they are also comfortable. This does not necessarily mean we have to go out to them and do anything, we just have to send them love and light, use our own positive energy to support them instead of ridiculing them so that they do not feel stigmatized which in turn means they are not afraid to get help sooner than later, ensuring that recovery time is shorter.
To share love with someone who is going through a tough season is to jumpstart a healing process in them. It reminds us that we can lean on each other and that we are not alone. This doesn’t matter whether or not we are communicating verbally or physically, sometimes it is simply enough to know that we are loved.
As spirit beings, when we are unwell, it means that there is a disconnect with the spirit which causes unease that presents itself in the physical body as “disease”. So, for us to understand what we are experiencing, we must connect to our spirit selves and get back in alignment.
