The Gift of Time
power of simply being
In a world obsessed with doing, The Gift of Time reminds us of the power of simply being.
This Soul Foundation initiative was launched to offer safe, compassionate spaces for individuals battling mental health and addiction challenges. Spaces where they could be seen, heard, and held without judgment.
The concept is beautifully simple: give people the gift of time. Volunteers visit communities and recovery centers not to instruct or diagnose, but to listen deeply, openly, and without an agenda.
Through this presence, they offer dignity, empathy, and connection to those who have often been forgotten by society.
Initially rooted in hospital visits, the Gift of Time evolved in 2024–2025 to focus on communities deeply affected by substance use and addiction, particularly at the Kampala Youth Recovery Foundation (KYRF) in Mutungo and Bugolobi.
When the USAID-funded Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) program at Butabika Hospital closed, many recovering individuals were left without support.
KYRF became their refuge, a place for “sober days,” where they could freshen up, receive treatment, and share a hot meal
Recognizing this gap, Soul Foundation responded. The team began visiting regularly, not with handouts alone, but with presence, food, and open ears. Over successive visits, what began as a food support effort became a healing dialogue.
